Why emoji take more room than they look

An emoji is one picture on screen, but networks count it in different ways.

X counts every emoji as 2

A smiley, a flag and a family emoji all take 2 of your characters on X, however many parts they are made of. Ten emoji are 20 characters there.

Some emoji are several characters

A skin tone, a flag or a family is built from several characters joined together. Most networks, and Foliwo, count each one, so 👍🏽 is 2 and a family of four is 7.

Threads counts the bytes

Threads counts an emoji by its size in bytes: a smiley is 4 and a family emoji 25. Bluesky and Mastodon count what you see, so any emoji is 1 there.
