Every network counts a post differently
The same text can take three posts on one network and five on the next. This is what each one counts.

X
280Each post holds 280 characters. X counts emoji and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters as 2, and every link as 23, however long. With Premium or Basic a post holds 25,000, so most text needs no thread at all.

Bluesky
300Each post holds 300 characters, counted the way you see them, so any emoji is 1. A post also stops at 3,000 bytes, which only long runs of emoji or non-Latin text reach. Links count in full.

Threads
500Each post holds 500 characters, but Threads counts every emoji as its size in bytes: a smiley is 4 and a family emoji 25. A post with more than 5 links fails, so the splitter moves extra links to the next post.

Mastodon
500Each post holds 500 characters on most servers; set yours if it allows more. Every link counts as 23, and a mention counts without its server: @[email protected] counts as @name.
