How YouTube reads it

The rules your title and description must follow

What YouTube accepts, what it shows, and what it quietly ignores.

Titles stop at 100 characters

YouTube won’t save a title longer than 100 characters, and it needs one to publish. Every character counts once, emoji included.

Descriptions are counted in bytes

The 5,000 limit is in bytes, not characters. Plain English letters take 1 byte, accented letters 2, Hindi, Chinese or Japanese 3, and emoji 4. A description full of emoji or written in another script runs out much sooner.

No < or >

YouTube rejects both in titles and descriptions, so an arrow like -> or a heart like <3 stops the upload. Swap them for → and ♥.

Titles get cut by width

YouTube cuts a title where the line runs out of room, not after a set number of characters. Wide letters like W, M and capitals fill it sooner than i or l, so two titles of the same length get cut at different points.

Hashtags: 3 show, 60 max

Up to 3 hashtags from the description show next to the title. Add more than 60 and YouTube ignores all of them.

Chapters come from timestamps

List timestamps in the description, starting at 0:00, at least 3 of them in order, each chapter 10 seconds or longer, and YouTube splits the video into chapters.

How much of a YouTube title shows

YouTube cuts by width, so this is how much of a title in ordinary words fits. Capitals and wide letters fit fewer.
